Visualizing U.S. Labor Trends in Tableau
The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic had a sudden, devastating impact on labor markets worldwide: among unionized and non-union sectors in the United States, millions of workers were furloughed or laid off. In the years following, union organizing at high-profile companies like Amazon and Starbucks have garnered national attention helped fuel upticks in union membership and union elections wins in major cities across the U.S.
Interested in these trends in unionization patterns, I analyzed recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to visualize and better understand three variables associated with organized labor: union membership, union member earnings, and major work stoppages in the U.S. from 2020-2024.
Project Overview
Performed exploratory analysis, data cleaning, and statistic analysis on labor union membership data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics using Excel and R
Built interactive dashboards in Tableau visualizing key trends in the dataset
Enhanced understanding by uncovering potential correlations among labor union membership, member median annual salary, and number of work stoppages from 2020-2024
